In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, every October our staff reminds these patients how much we care. • Wear it pink. Many staff members wear all-pink everything: pink gowns, gloves, masks and even bouffants decorated with pink bows. We got all of our pink supplies from our medical supply company, which supplies them all year round. • Targeted radiation delivered during surgery. In the entrance to our center hangs a poster with a message of support and a note about our Intra-Operative Radiation Therapy program, in which our surgical and radiation oncologists work together to combine radiation therapy with tumor removal. During surgery, the oncology team delivers local- ized, targeted radiation directly into the area where the tumor has been removed. The treatment minimizes exposure of surrounding healthy tissue to radiation and lowers the risk of recurrence. Our staff dressed in pink and the radiation poster are the first things patients see when they step off the elevator and into our facility. It's our way of letting them know they're not going through this alone. Elaine Gibson, RN, BSN, CNOR Goshen (Ind.)
