• Fostering close partnerships. Ms. Haberkorn invites folks from
the infection prevention department to put on scrubs and observe sur-
gery. "I accompany them so I can explain what's going on," she says.
The visitors observe everything from how procedures are set up, how
rooms are cleaned, how instruments are handled, to how many times
the doors were opened during a case, to whether a mask was tied
tightly enough. "If they see something wrong, they'll correct it on the
spot," says Ms. Haberkorn. Through the close relationship, a terminal
clean and between-case cleaning checklists have been developed in
conjunction with the infection department.
