4. Look for trends
Use data from your sharps injury log to
identify devices that are frequently
involved in sharps-related harm, and see if
more suitable devices are available or if
manufacturer reps need to be brought in
to provide additional training. Data can
also identify departments where work-
practice controls can be improved or addi-
tional oversight should be provided. Also
consider when sharps injuries occur. A
substantial percentage of injuries occur
while devices are being used, but even
more occur after use. By evaluating when
injuries occur, you can target and imple-
ment prevention measures such as mak-
ing sure staff activate sharps-injury pre-
vention features before or after use and
employ hands-free passing zones.
