But even in the "OR of the future," not every room is equipped for high-fideli- ty, stereophonic sound to please Dr. Jam-On-It (and, depend- ing on the music, assault the ears of his staff). A resourceful nurse will make do. Here's a simple, inexpensive and low-tech solution. Find your surgeon's playlist or online streaming source on his smartphone (if you dare to swipe through its contents), then put the phone in an open plastic container, such as a basin or empty supply package. (A ceramic bowl or mug works, too, but a plastic box is easy to find around the OR.) This will amplify the phone's speaker, and your OR has an instant sound system. Paula Watkins, RN, CNOR Little Rock, Ark. DIY Stereo Sound for the OR • TURN IT UP A plastic container can turn a phone into a sound system. David Bernard pwatkins12@comcast.net
