Check with your local fire department to see if any of the firefight- ers want a part-time gig. They're typical- ly on for 24 hours and might have sev- eral days off between shifts, so they're often avail- able for per diem work. We work with 4 firefighters. They're smart and fast learners. They help turn over ORs, stock linen, clean and organize storage and equipment rooms, help position patients and run lab work to the local hospital. They're obviously experts in fire safety and are often trained as paramedics, so we have an emergency response team on site most days. They even help teach staff basic life support and advanced cardiovascular life support.
