t's somehow fitting that
San Antonio will be the
host city for OR
Excellence 2015 in October. For that's
where, back in 2008, we here at
Outpatient Surgery Magazine offi-
cially announced that we were launch-
ing a yearly educational and network-
ing conference, a live event to accom-
pany our monthly magazine, our
weekly e-mail newsletter and our daily
digital news stories.
Our intentions were good, but our
timing was awful. Little did we know
that we'd be launching our show
smack in the middle of an economic
recession. Vendors were
pumping the brakes on
advertising and exhibiting
while surgical facilities were slashing
their travel budgets. Facility leaders
who wanted to join us simply couldn't.
"I just had to fire 3 staff members,"
one OR manager told us. "How would
it look it I hopped on a plane to San
Francisco to go to a conference?"
Undeterred, we marched on into the
unknown, fearful that nobody would
show up to the party we were throw-
ing. As is often the case, our worries
were unfounded.
