IDEAS That Work PATIENT WARMING Take the Chill Out of Cautery Pads Putting cold cautery grounding pads on patients' bare skin can be a real shock. Before you apply them, place the pads in a blanket warming cabinet for 15 minutes or so to take the chill out. Instead of buying packaged sterile gauze, Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates in Oklahoma City, Okla., purchases non-sterile gauze. "We repackage it and autoclave it in-office," says Surgical Coordinator Vickie Hennessee, RN. •ID vendors by scrub color. To make it easy for staff to quickly identify and locate vendors, Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, changed the color of the sales vendor scrubs from the standard issue green to a bright blue. "The color change not only ensures that vendors are guided to the correct areas, but also assists in preventing the occasional room hopping and hallway sales presentations," says Col. Joe Paulino, chief of perioperative nursing services. • Where's the autoclave printout? Tape the autoclave printout to the back of the operative report. "This saves time if you need to verify sterility and saves lots of space in your autoclave book," says Judy Perrin, RN, CNOR, administrator of the North Georgia Eye Surgery Center in Gainesville, Ga.
