The healthcare community is rethinking ways in which hospitals can best serve the physical and emotional needs of critically ill patients in the ICU, as well as the physicians, nurses and support staff who care for them. The workflow advantages of ceiling supply units (booms) versus traditional headwalls are well documented. As a delivery system for medical gases and electrical power, booms provide the means to eliminate cable clutter and tripping hazards. Booms also facilitate cleaning and disinfection protocols. Equally important, booms provide superior flexibility in positioning equipment to help improve patient accessibility — a critical component of treating and monitoring COVID-19 patients receiving mechanical ventilation. Booms also make it possible to position ICU beds near windows or other architectural features that can't accommodate a headwall. The fact is, many ICUs in COVID-19 hotspots have been operating near, at, or over capacity. Making good use of every square foot of available space is one of those necessities that requires creative problem-solving. While facilitating equipment management and enhancing clinical workflows in the ICU have been worthy objectives prior to the pandemic, satisfying these logistical requirements has taken on even added importance as hospital personnel struggle to maintain the highest standards of care for an extremely vulnerable and fast-growing patient population. Numbers alone don't begin to tell the story of the physical and emotional burdens experienced by fearful patients and exhausted providers. In most cases, care team members are the only human connection and link to a patient's immediate family and outside world. Improving access to the patient's head not only offers important clinical advantages, it enhances interpersonal communications in deeply poignant and meaningful ways. Accompanying articles describe how the new Maquet Moduevo Bridge ceiling supply unit and Maquet Moduevo Sky distributor are optimized for ICU installations, especially when architectural constraints and low ceiling heights need to be accommodated.
