On the Cover
Nurses who have always been
turned off by the stench of
surgical smoke are now
becoming increasingly aware
of the health risks associated
with plume-producing proce-
dures. As they advocate for
smoke-free facilities at the
local level, national lobbyists
are pushing for state lawmak-
ers to make smoke evacuation
mandatory in every OR across
the country. The combined
efforts are working as the
movement to eliminate surgi-
cal smoke continues to gain
much-needed momentum.
