patients from harm, but also provides nurses with opportunities to
become better leaders. "They've taken ownership in our infection pre-
vention efforts and have developed skills that will help further their
careers," says Ms. Burwell.
Her staff's dedication to infection prevention and ownership in the
efforts to reduce SSIs has them constantly looking for ways to
improve how they protect patients from harm. It took plenty of work
to get to zero infections, and it will take plenty more to keep the rate
from climbing again. Ms. Burwell knows her team is up for the chal-
lenge.
"Our accomplishment was achieved through the collaboration and
dedication of our entire staff and physicians," she says. "They strive
daily to provide excellent care for our patients."
